Mining Operations in Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal to Be Modernized with €99 Million in EBRD Funding
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a €99.1 million loan to Portuguese conglomerate Mota-Engil to support the growth of the mining sector in Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal.
The main objective of the operation is to modernize mining operations in both countries to increase productivity. Most of the investment will go towards purchasing new equipment, refinancing investments in three mines and meeting working capital needs.
In addition, Mota-Engil will make strategic investments to improve the skills of the local workforce by introducing accredited technical training programs in partnership with national educational institutions.
The initiative will help participants acquire the technical skills sought by today’s mining industry, thereby improving their access to skilled employment opportunities.
The company will also implement measures to increase women’s representation in the sector through initiatives focused on recruiting, retaining and advancing women in both technical and leadership positions.
The €99.1 million loan adds to the more than €620 million the EBRD has already invested across the region, covering Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal. These investments span a range of sectors, including finance, infrastructure, energy, natural resources, telecommunications and agribusiness.
