AfDB to Fund Expansion of Morocco’s Airport Infrastructure with €270M

On Tuesday, September 29, African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Morocco signed a funding agreement in Casablanca to provide €270 million euros for Airport Infrastructure Expansion and Modernization Program (PEMIA).

This initiative aims to strengthen Kingdom’s air connectivity, and it is part of its strategy to become a leading hub linking Africa, Europe and the rest of the world. It also supports the implementation of Morocco’s ‘Tourism Vision 2030’, a plan to strengthen the sector’s international competitiveness.

PEMIA will modernize and expand the country’s main airports, boosting operational capacity through infrastructure upgrades, an expanded air navigation system, and stronger security measures. Furthermore, it will focus on the sustainability and competitiveness of Moroccan air transport.

Planned investments include new security equipment, automated baggage handling systems, and digital tools that improve passenger experience.

In addition to improving comfort and bringing Morocco’s airports up to the most demanding international standards, the program will also prepare them for future mobility needs. By 2030, it will increase capacity to 14 million passengers at the Airport of Marrakech, 5 million at Agadir, 3,6M at Tangier and 3M at Fez.

The Moroccan Government and the AfDB expect these transformations to have an important impact on the tourism, logistics, commercial sectors and, of course, air transport.

The signing was attended by AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah, and the Minister of Economy and Finance of Morocco, Nadia Fettah.
