The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a loan of US$95 million to improve environmental conditions and expand sanitation services in the Panama Metropolitan Area, Arraiján and La Chorrera. The programme will directly benefit some 310,000 people by increasing the coverage of sanitation services.

The funds will finance several key projects in Panama Bay and the Metropolitan Area. These include the refurbishment of the Amador sewerage system, the construction of sanitation systems in areas near Condado del Rey, and the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Caimito wastewater treatment plant, as well as the equipping of Dos Líneas in its first phase.

The project also includes works to facilitate the reuse of effluent from the Juan Díaz treatment plant and will continue to support the design and construction of the Matansillo River main sewer. In Arraiján Oeste and La Chorrera, funding will be provided for activities relating to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of wastewater collection, conveyance and treatment systems.

In addition to the infrastructure works, the programme includes the refurbishment of the Interactive Centre for Environmental Education and training for the Coordinating Unit of the Panama Sanitation Programme (UCPSP). The training will focus on contract and risk management, with the aim of developing more resilient and sustainable sanitation projects.

The benefits will not be limited to those who gain direct access to the services. Improvements to sanitation systems will help to improve the quality of watercourses, indirectly benefiting the population across the entire area. At the same time, the UCPSP will strengthen its capacity to manage projects, risks and issues relating to environmental sustainability.

This transaction is the first individual transaction under a Conditional Credit Line for Investment Projects (CCLIP) worth USD 210 million, the purpose of which is to improve health and environmental conditions in the provinces of Panama and West Panama.
