The IDB is allocating more than US$128 million to strengthen water security in Ecuador
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a financing package of US$128.48 million to support projects related to access to water, sanitation, and climate risk prevention. The initiative also aims to strengthen the capacity of the Development Bank of Ecuador (BDE B.P.) to mobilize capital for these types of initiatives.
Of the total amount, US$120 million will be provided as a loan to carry out various projects. In addition to this amount, US$4.76 million in credit and US$3.72 million in grants from the Green Climate Fund will be allocated to strengthen the Amazon’s water resilience.
An estimated 283,000 people will benefit from the program, 166,000 of them in the Amazon region. The initiatives include improvements to water supply, sanitation, waste management, and drainage systems to mitigate the effects of floods and droughts.
The project is part of the Amazonía Siempre initiative, which promotes sustainable development and the protection of Amazonian ecosystems. In addition, it will receive US$12 million in local funding to supplement international funds.
