The EBRD and EU co-finance the green transition of Romania’s Port of Constanța

Romania’s largest port and one of the Black Sea’s key transport hubs will receive €25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and €19.8 million in grants from the European Union (EU).

This funding will be topped by 55.2 million from the operating company itself, bringing the total investment in the port’s green transformation project to €100 million.

Among the initiatives driving this green transition, the full electrification of the port’s infrastructure and terminal equipment stands out, alongside new power networks, cold ironing (onshore power supply), transformer stations, grid connections and other related installations.

In addition, the Port of Constanța will be equipped with several electric cranes and electric terminal tractors. In this way, the project will help reduce polluting emissions while also improving operational efficiency and vessel calling at the port.

By reducing the port’s emissions, the project reinforces local environmental development goals and builds on existing initiatives. As such, this set of actions forms part of the EBRD’s Green Cities programme, marking a milestone for Constanța’s entry into the programme and the subsequent development of its Green City Action Plan.

The initiative has been classified as a 100% GET (Green Economy Transition) investment, as it represents a key contribution to decarbonisation of country’s logistics and transport sectors.

This support brings the EBRD’s total investment in Romania to over €12.6 billion across 597 projects in Romania, making it the leading investment institution in the country.
