Spain strengthens its cooperation with the World Bank to promote global development
Spain has announced a new cooperation package for the World Bank with the aim of promoting sustainable development, climate action and debt relief for the most vulnerable countries. This initiative consolidates Spain’s role as one of the main drivers of international financing geared towards sustainability and economic resilience.
Of the total amount committed, €19.5 million will go to the Habitable Planet Fund, a World Bank instrument that supports international projects focused on clean energy, water management and nature conservation, generating both local and global benefits.
In addition, Spain will contribute €66.67 million to the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI), of which €40.52 million will be disbursed immediately. This mechanism allows the debt of countries that meet certain requirements to be cancelled, freeing up resources that can be allocated to priority areas such as education, health and employment.
Spain’s commitment also includes additional support of €20 million for the Spanish Fund for Latin America and the Caribbean (SFLAC), which supports regional cooperation and institutional strengthening, and an additional €5 million for the Global Facility for Decarbonisation of Transport (GFDT), aimed at reducing emissions and promoting cleaner mobility.
These actions are part of the Seville Action Platform, which brings together various initiatives promoted by Spain to address the problem of global debt and improve access to sustainable financing.
With this new financial package, Spain is strengthening its leadership in international cooperation and its commitment to a green and inclusive economy, positioning itself as a strategic partner in global efforts to combat climate change, generate employment and strengthen global economic stability.
