Guyana modernises its social protection system with support from the IDB

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a loan of USD 350 million to support Guyana’s efforts to modernise its social protection network, with a particular focus on the digital transformation of public services, expanding coverage, and strengthening empowerment programmes.

This operation seeks to improve the efficiency of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (MHSSS) by digitising its processes, which will reduce costs, streamline procedures and facilitate access to benefits for the most vulnerable populations.

Digitisation will be applied to key programmes such as pensions, which will benefit more than 82,000 senior citizens through electronic payments. Public assistance and training systems for people with disabilities will also be strengthened, and access to support services for women and survivors of gender-based violence will be expanded through more accessible and coordinated technological platforms.

With this investment, Guyana is moving towards a more modern, inclusive, and sustainable social protection system, with the support of the IDB.
