The Global Gateway Forum 2025, held in Brussels on 9 and 10 October, brought together political, financial and business leaders to redefine Europe’s role in global investment. The meeting confirmed that the European Union has already achieved its goal of mobilising €300 billion in strategic investments ahead of schedule, consolidating the Global Gateway as its main tool for promoting connectivity, energy and digitalisation around the world.

The forum marked a key transition: moving from planning to effective project implementation. In cooperation with the World Bank Group, the European Commission announced an initial portfolio of 18 high-impact projects in energy, transport and digital infrastructure, spread across Africa, Asia and Latin America. The common goal: to generate employment, improve basic services and attract sustainable private investment.

Among the most notable announcements was support for the Kambarata-1 hydroelectric project in Central Asia, with a €900 million package led by the EU and the European Investment Bank (EIB), and a possible extension of up to €1.3 billion from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). New guarantees worth €5 billion were also launched to reduce risks and facilitate the entry of private capital into green and digital infrastructure.

During the thematic sessions, participants addressed energy security, digital sovereignty and the geopolitics of connectivity, emphasising the need to strengthen partnerships with key regions such as Africa, the Pacific and Latin America. The creation of the Global Gateway Investment Hub, a one-stop shop for companies interested in participating in the programme’s projects, was also announced.

The forum concluded with a clear message: Europe seeks to consolidate its position as a global player that invests in sustainable, resilient and strategic infrastructure, with tangible benefits for both partner countries and its own economic autonomy.
