CAF mobilises USD 1.13 billion to promote sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Board of Directors of CAF — Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean — approved a financing package worth USD 1.13 billion in Lima to advance projects linked to sustainable development in the region, as part of its regular meeting held in early March 2026. The session brought together representatives of shareholder countries and regional authorities, who discussed issues such as climate resilience, risk management, regional integration and institutional strengthening.
The resources will be distributed across three main lines of action:
- USD 450 million for Uruguay: a credit line aimed at strengthening public debt management and improving the response to climate emergencies. This operation seeks to reinforce fiscal capacity and preparedness for extreme natural events in the South American country.
- USD 230 million for ACOSOL in Spain: a loan to guarantee water security in 11 municipalities on the Costa del Sol, focused on ensuring water supply and efficient water management in the face of climate variability and growing demand for the resource.
- USD 450 million for Ecuador: two operations aimed at strengthening public safety and improving natural disaster response capacity. This financing supports actions to strengthen the institutions responsible for safety and disaster risk management.
During the meeting, the Board also approved the start of the process for St. Vincent and the Grenadines to become a shareholder of CAF, which will allow the country to access long-term financing and technical cooperation resources to advance its development agenda.
The transfer of the chairmanship of the Board to Uruguay was also formalised. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Gabriel Oddone, will assume the chairmanship for a one-year term beginning in April 2026, replacing Davendranath Tancoo, Minister of Finance of Trinidad and Tobago.
During the meeting, other initiatives linked to the institutional agenda were also presented. CAF released its Transparency Report, which shows progress in access to information, governance, and accountability. In addition, the institution shared a strategy to position Peru as a global player in tourism, with an emphasis on diversifying destinations, consolidating tourist corridors such as Cusco–Machu Picchu, and developing cultural and literary products of regional interest, in collaboration with international organisations.
