CAF and the EU within the framework of the Global Gateway promote digital transformation in Trinidad and Tobago

The European Commission has given the green light to a historic collaboration between the development bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) and the European Union (EU) in Trinidad and Tobago. This project, valued at 3 million euros, focuses on catalyzing the country’s digital transformation, addressing key aspects such as electronic identity, public data interoperability and the creation of a government data center.

This collaboration not only represents an important step for Trinidad and Tobago, but also stands out as the first operation approved directly to CAF by the Investment Facility for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Commission. Furthermore, this project marks CAF’s inaugural participation in Trinidad and Tobago within the framework of the Global Gateway.

CAF and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago are already immersed in an investment program aimed at the development of the country’s Government Data Center. The institution has approved technical assistance of USD 225,000 for the conceptualization of the expansion of the Data Center and the diagnosis of the associated ICT infrastructure. This sets the stage for an investment loan that will complete the long-term expansion of the Data Center.

With the support of the European Union, the feasibility and detailed engineering of the Data Center will be carried out, together with the contribution to the first phases of implementation of the public data interoperability platform and the digital identification (e-ID) program. ). This technical and financial collaboration reinforces the joint commitment towards the digital modernization and improvement of Trinidad and Tobago’s technological infrastructure.

The project finds its context in the renewed investment agenda of the EU in Latin America and the Caribbean, promoted during the meeting of Ministers of Economy and Finance of the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in September 2023 in Santiago de Compostela. This crucial forum brought together 60 finance ministers from both sides of the Atlantic, focused on designing strategies to overcome gaps in the green, digital and social transitions.
