CABEI promotes the modernization of road infrastructure in Costa Rica through a Technical Cooperation worth 5.9 million USD
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has approved a Technical Cooperation for US$5.9 million for pre-investment studies for the construction, expansion and rehabilitation of key routes in Costa Rica. This effort seeks to improve connectivity, boost economic growth and benefit communities in various regions of the country through a more efficient and modern road infrastructure.
Featured projects
- Construction of new routes:
- Radial in Heredia: Designed to decongest one of the busiest areas of the Greater Metropolitan Area.
- Intersection of national route No. 175 and radial Desamparados in San José: Improved access at strategic points.
- Expansion and rehabilitation of roads:
- Liberia-Comunidad route: Transformation from two to four lanes, with complementary infrastructure such as bicycle lanes and bus bays. This project seeks to boost tourism and trade in Guanacaste, a key region for the country’s economic development.
- Pozón-Jacó and Birmania-Santa Cecilia (Monteverde): Rehabilitation to optimize traffic and connectivity between regions.
- Strategic Trade and Tourism Corridors:
- Limón-Sixaola route and route 32: Improvements in sections that connect the Caribbean region with the rest of the country.
- Barranca-Caldera: Expansion to four lanes to facilitate the transport of goods to the Costa Rican Pacific.
- Border routes: Extensions in Liberia-Peñas Blancas, Palmar Norte-Paso Canoas and Río Frío-Tablillas, which reinforce regional integration.
- San José-Caldera Road Concession (Route 27):
- Technical and economic support in the negotiation for the extension of this key artery for trade and the transit of people.
The director for Costa Rica at CABEI, Erwen Masís, highlighted that these projects not only modernize infrastructure, but also strengthen trade, tourism and the country’s competitiveness. By addressing bottlenecks on strategic routes, it is hoped to improve the quality of life of thousands of people and generate economic opportunities in historically lagging regions.
