CABEI is driving the modernization of one of Costa Rica’s main highways
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) participated in the signing of the law authorizing $770 million in financing for the expansion and improvement of the highway corridor between San José and San Ramón. Of the total, $600 million will be provided by the BCIE and $170 million by the OPEC Fund for International Development, making this one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the country’s recent history.
The project involves work on more than 55 kilometers of highway, the modernization of 16 key interchanges, and the completion of related construction projects. It is estimated that the project will directly benefit more than 500,000 people and approximately 170,000 daily commuters by reducing travel times and improving road safety.
Following approval of the law, the bidding process is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026. Construction would begin in 2027 and last approximately four years, under internal and external oversight mechanisms designed to ensure transparency, quality, and efficiency.
This is one of the most eagerly anticipated projects in Costa Rica, both for its impact on transportation and for its potential to boost economic activity and improve the quality of life for those who use this road on a daily basis.
