Business opportunities in the water and sanitation sector in Latin America and Africa

Water is one of the basic and essential resources for the human and economic development of the different communities of the world. However, current complexities, such as climate change, mean that its access is not guaranteed depending on which part of the world we are.

According to the World Bank, around 2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safely managed drinking water services, 3.6 billion do not have safe sanitation services and 2.3 billion lack basic handwashing facilities. The gaps in access to sources of water supply and sanitation, population growth, intensive use of water, the greater variability of rainfall and pollution are factors that combine in many places transforming water into one of the main risks for economic progress, poverty eradication and sustainable development.

Galician companies committed to the development and sustainable management of water that are looking for business opportunities in this market niche in Latin America or Africa can rely on the International Tenders Service – SALT from where we offer advice and individualized search for tenders in the sector of water and sanitation. In the following graphs we show quantitative information about the tenders currently available:

In the first and second graph we can see the number of tenders in Latin America and Africa to which we have access from SALT, highlighting, above all, the largest number of opportunities that we can find on the African continent. On the other hand, the tenders according to the type of contract (works, supplies or consultancy) are varied, so Galician companies interested in participating in these processes have room to find the opportunity that is most similar to their services.

In the last graph we can see the number of tenders from the selected multilateral organizations in each continent. In this case, we see how the Inter-American Development Bank or the African Development Bank act according to their region of specialization, while the World Bank, as its name suggests, is present on both continents.
