The World Bank will support the Brazilian state of Paraná with a loan of US$186 million to strengthen water security, protect agriculture and increase the resilience of rural and urban communities to droughts, floods and other extreme weather events. The measure is particularly significant for Paraná because agribusiness accounts for around a third of its economic output and the majority of its exports.

One of the main objectives will be to protect the agricultural sector. The project aims to support some 9,200 farmers across more than 130,000 hectares, through practices that reduce crop losses during dry seasons and help maintain productivity in the face of extreme weather conditions.

Basic services will also be expanded. Around 60,000 people in rural areas will have better access to water and sanitation, particularly in communities that have so far received insufficient attention. In urban areas, measures aimed at improving water safety will benefit around 2.2 million residents.

The project also involves a significant environmental investment. 10,690 hectares of riparian forests and degraded land situated alongside rivers and springs will be restored. In addition, sustainable management practices will be introduced on more than 130,000 hectares of agricultural land. The strategy aims to ensure that ecosystem conservation and agricultural production work together to enhance water security.
