Peru is set to boost the Arequipa–Colca tourist corridor with funding from the World Bank

The World Bank has approved a loan of 77.2 million dollars to fund the programme to strengthen the Arequipa-Colca tourist corridor in southern Peru. The initiative aims to improve infrastructure, enhance the area’s cultural and natural attractions, and promote sustainable economic growth based on tourism.

The funds will enable improvements to be made in strategic sectors linked to tourism development, such as transport, water and sanitation, health, environmental conservation and destination management. These investments aim to facilitate access to the main attractions, enhance the visitor experience and consolidate the Arequipa–Colca corridor as a competitive destination both nationally and internationally.

The programme also aims to encourage private investment and create quality jobs. It is estimated that it will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs linked to tourism, benefiting local businesses, service providers, craftspeople, farmers and communities involved in the sector’s value chain.

The initiative will be implemented by the Arequipa Regional Government with technical support from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, and aims to become a model for regional development that can be replicated in other parts of the country. Its aim is to harness the economic potential of these areas and expand opportunities for local communities.
