Over 500 km of Serbian roads to be modernised with EIB support
The European Investment Bank (EIB) will grant Serbia a €150 million loan for the reconstruction and modernisation of approximately 540 kilometres of local and national roads. The main objective is to improve the country’s road connectivity and bring its transport network closer to European Union standards.
The financing will be complemented by a €1.4 million grant provided under the EIB Global Economic Resilience Initiative, as well as technical assistance from the European Union to support its preparation and implementation.
The initiative aims to:
- Increase road safety.
- Strengthen resilience to climate change.
- Protect and preserve the existing road network.
- Reduce environmental impact and journey times.
The works will include specific measures to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, especially on local roads, by improving pedestrian crossings, installing protective barriers near schools, providing more appropriate signage, constructing pavements and developing cycle lanes.
The Serbian government stresses that, alongside the construction of new motorways and expressways, the modernisation of existing roads is essential for the balanced development of the country. A higher-quality road network will promote population mobility, employment, faster transport of goods and passengers, attract investment and boost tourism.
