El Salvador promotes an ambitious plan to modernise its urban mobility with support from CABEI
The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Ministry of Finance of El Salvador signed a loan agreement to launch the Road Infrastructure and Urban Mobility Programme – Phase I, an initiative that seeks to improve connectivity and traffic in key areas of the country. The agreement represents the start of one of the most significant investments in road infrastructure in recent years.
The project will focus on three strategic corridors that concentrate much of the daily traffic in the San Salvador Metropolitan Area and the connection to the coastal area: LIB12S Route between CA04S and Nuevo Cuscatlán, Constitución Boulevard, and Los Próceres Boulevard.
Planned infrastructure works:
- Construction or refurbishment of 15 traffic distributors.
- Expansion of Route LIB12S, increasing its capacity from 2 to a maximum of 6 lanes.
- Construction of an overpass for pedestrians.
- 800 metres of retaining walls to protect adjacent properties and streets.
- Renovation of more than 5,300 metres of major and minor drainage systems.
According to the programme’s estimates, these interventions will reduce the average travel time on the corridors involved from 26 to 17 minutes, representing an approximate one-third reduction in travel times.
The program also incorporates the implementation of advanced technology for urban traffic management through an ITS (Intelligent Transportation System). This system will include the installation of 240 traffic detection cameras, capable of monitoring vehicles and pedestrians, with the aim of improving traffic management and moving towards more efficient urban mobility.
