CABEI strategic visit to Spain and Europe: boosting collaboration to promote regional impact projects

From Monday, September 2nd through September 13th, Executive President Gisela Sánchez and Central American Bank for Economic Integration  – CABEI’s Representative in Spain and Europe, Mauricio Chacón, visited Spain, France and Belgium.

Gisela Sánchez’s visit to Spain was key to strengthening relations between the bank and the country, coinciding with the commemoration of Spain’s 20th anniversary as a member of CABEI, which has enabled the country to contribute more than US$700 million for projects in Central America.

During his stay, Sánchez met with King Felipe VI, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and other leaders to discuss CABEI’s new five-year strategy (2025-2029), which focuses on transparency, efficiency and projects that generate a positive impact in areas such as sustainable mobility, climate action and gender equity.

One of the main objectives of this visit was to strengthen the alliance with Spain, seeking to make it a “gateway” for expanding CABEI’s collaboration with other European countries. In meetings with organizations such as ICEX and the Ibero-American General Secretariat, opportunities were explored to promote trade and investment in strategic sectors. In addition, the role of Spain as an essential partner in CABEI’s next steps was highlighted, particularly in areas such as technology and social development.

CABEI and Spain’s Secretary of State for Trade signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement includes non-reimbursable financing for studies and reimbursable financing for projects that promote exports and investment by Spanish companies in areas such as sustainability and digitalization. During the visit, CABEI also renewed its agreement with Mafex, the Spanish Railway Association, to strengthen collaboration in the development of railway projects in CABEI member countries, taking advantage of the experience of the Spanish railway industry.
