CABEI promotes a large Wastewater Sanitation Works Program in Costa Rica

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) approved US$565 million in financing to develop an ambitious Wastewater Sanitation Works Program in Costa Rica. This project will benefit more than one million people, promoting sustainable development, improved water quality, and job creation.

Main projects and scope

The program includes the construction of 57 pumping stations, four wastewater treatment plants and more than 159,000 new household connections. In addition, 200 jobs are expected to be generated during the execution of the works.

The main works include:

  • Improvement of GAM’s environment: Will benefit 1.07 million people in 11 cantons, with the rehabilitation of 134.6 km of pipelines to optimize the Los Tajos treatment plant.
  • Sanitary sewer system in Jacó: Will benefit 38,367 people with the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and sewer system, eliminating septic tanks and reducing water contamination.
  • Sanitary sewer system in Quepos: Will benefit 28,463 people with the construction of a collection and treatment system. Will allow more than 90% of the population to have access to potable water by 2046, reducing the discharge of wastewater into the sea.
  • Sanitary sewer system in Palmares: Will benefit 31,605 people, revaluing properties and promoting research in water treatment.
  • Sanitary sewer system in Golfito: Will protect the Golfito National Wildlife Refuge by eliminating polluting discharges and improving water quality.

The project approved for the Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA) seeks to reduce the contamination of water sources, improve sanitation systems in several regions, and foster economic growth through the development of key infrastructure. Works are expected to begin in 2025 and will contribute significantly to the country’s development. In addition, this Program complements five other CABEI-financed potable water supply and sanitation programs in Costa Rica.
