AIIB publishes its 2024 Impact Report: USD 8.4 billion allocated to projects that promote sustainable development
In 2024, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) approved USD 8.4 billion for 51 projects focused on key sectors such as energy, water, transportation, sustainable cities, and digital and social infrastructure. These projects reflect the bank’s commitment to sustainable development, with concrete benefits for millions of people.
According to its latest Sustainable Development Bonds Impact Report, the approved projects will prevent 28.5 million tons of CO₂ emissions per year, bring safe drinking water to 71 million people, and improve access to transportation for at least 410 million beneficiaries. Among the most notable examples are:
- Solar energy systems in the Maldives
- Low-carbon urban transport in Egypt
- Climate investment funds in Brazil
67% of the financing approved in 2024 was allocated to climate action, and almost all projects were aligned with SDG 13 (Climate Action), reinforcing the AIIB’s role as a catalyst for sustainable development in Asia.
In addition, the bank announced an update to its Corporate Strategy in June. This new plan will guide the AIIB until 2030 and includes ambitious goals such as doubling its annual financing to USD17 billion. It also seeks to improve development outcomes in areas such as emissions reduction, gender equality, and SDG compliance. To ensure the effectiveness of its investments, a new indicator of completed project success is being incorporated into the bank’s monitoring system to assess whether the expected results of each initiative are being achieved.
In short, with more than USD60 billion financed since 2016, the AIIB continues to consolidate its role as a key institution for promoting sustainable, resilient, and inclusive infrastructure in the region and globally.
